In Huanchaco, Peru, fishermen ride the waves on caballitos de totora, traditional reed boats crafted from local totora reeds harvested in the Chimu reserve swamps. These ancient balsas, used since pre-Columbian times, are paddled out to fish and surfed back to shore with the day's catch, which is sold fresh on the beach. Afterward, the boats are left to dry along the coastline, preserving a unique, centuries-old fishing tradition.
